These geological curiosities are formed when relatively hard rock protects a column of softer rock below it from weathering and erosion. When the first light of sunrise reflects within the theatre, the red, orange, and white colours appear to glow from within, creating an unforgettable spectacle.

Most canyon lovers are familiar with Buckskin Gulch near Utah and AZ’s border. This is one of the longest Slot Canyons of the Southwest. Only a few campsites are safe here along its fifteen-mile stretch of deep, narrow canyon due to the risks of potential flash flooding. Unfortunately, the canyon does flash almost annually, but some do not make it out alive. It took me some practice and innovation to make remarkable tripod feet to keep my camera from slowly sinking into the mud. I would use a long shutter cable, from my trigger fingers to the shutter of my lens, so that I could stand over to the side of my camera on more stable ground to make the necessary lengthy time exposures on film.
